Mandavgarh – City of Joy

Mandavgarh ( commonly known as “Mandu” or “Mandav“) is located at a distance of about 110 km from the Indore city of Madhya Pradesh. The small area is located in between of the Vindhya Ranges. It was founded in the 10th century by the Parmar rulers ( Jayavarman II ), later who made it their fort capital.

After a few years, it was conquered by the Sultans of Delhi and they named it Shadiabad which means “The City of Joy”. There are a host of historical monuments here which are constructed on the fusion of Hindu and Afghan style of architecture.

Mandavgarh is famous for the beautiful and stunning Forts. The fort is 82 km in the perimeter, which is considered the biggest fort in India. The Mandu has more than 40 monuments which are categorised into three broad categories: the Royal Enclave Group, the Central Village Group and the Rewa Kund Group. The city is also remembered for the romantic tales of legendary Rani Roopmati and Baz Bahadur which still haunts the place, Interesting!!

Jahaz Mahal

Jahaz Mahal was built ruling period of Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din Khilji, who had 15,000 women as his consorts. To keep them comfortable and safe he built this splendid Jahaz Mahalin the 15th century. The Jahaz word means a ship and Mahal refers to a palace. The palace is surrounded by a pond, this is the reason why this place is called Jahaz Mahal.

Rani Rupmati Mahal

This place is specially built for the Rani Rupmati, she was a beautiful vocal artist and had a love story with Baz Bahadur. Baz Bahadur built this palace as a token of love for Rani Roopmati. This palace is constructed on the banks of river Narmada because it is the Rani Rupmati had a very deep love and respect for the river that she never drinks water until she saw the Narmada river.

Baz Bahadur’s Palace

As the name reflects, this palace belongs to the brave Baz Bahadur. This palace was the most loved palace of the king that he never left this palace and shifted to his other palaces. This place is having lush gardens and stages for dancing and singing artists.

Jami Masjid

This is a giant red-stoned mosque which is even visible from a few kilometers away because of its mesmerizing architectural techniques used by Hoshang Shah who had a vision and dream to replicate a mosque from Damascus, Syria.
