Legend has it that the original temple was built by Lord Soma (the moon god) in gold, but was destroyed and rebuilt several times by different kings and rulers. The current temple was reconstructed in 1951, and is an architectural marvel that blends traditional and modern styles.

The temple complex is spread over an area of 20 acres, and is surrounded by the Arabian Sea on three sides. The main temple structure is 155 feet tall and has a beautiful shikhara (spire) that is adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures.

The temple is open to people of all religions, and is visited by millions of devotees every year. It is believed that visiting the Somnath temple and offering prayers to Lord Shiva can wash away all sins and bestow blessings upon the devotees.

Apart from the main temple, there are several other attractions in the complex, including a museum that showcases the history of the temple and its artifacts, and a light and sound show that depicts the story of the temple’s construction and destruction.

The temple complex also has a beautiful garden that is spread over 5 acres and has a variety of plants and flowers. There is also a beach nearby where visitors can enjoy the scenic beauty of the Arabian Sea and take a dip in the holy waters.

The best time to visit Somnath Mahadev Jyotirlinga is during the Maha Shivratri festival, which is celebrated with great pomp and show. The temple is beautifully decorated with lights and flowers, and there are several cultural programs and religious ceremonies that take place during this time.
