The temple complex is believed to have been built during the 8th century by Bappa Rawal, the founder of the Mewar dynasty. The temple is named after Eklingji, a form of Lord Shiva who is worshipped here. The temple has been expanded over the centuries by various rulers of Mewar, and the present structure is the result of several renovations and additions.

The temple complex has a unique architecture, with a pyramidal shape roof and a huge pillared hall that houses a magnificent idol of Lord Shiva. The idol is four-faced and is made of black marble. It is said that the idol was brought here from the Kailash mountain by Bappa Rawal himself.
